Light Enhanced Calcification in Hermatypic Corals: New Insights from Light Spectral Responses

چکیده
Light enhanced calcification (LEC) is a well-documented phenomenon in reef-building corals. The main mechanism proposed for LEC is that photosynthetic CO2 uptake by the algal symbionts elevates the pH and thus enhances calcification. We evaluated the role of light and of photosynthesis on calcification by assessing the response of the corals Porites lutea and Acropora variabilis to different components of the light spectrum. Calcification and photosynthesis of both species decreased under “lagoon” blue, green and red light (peaks at 500, 550, and 600 nm, respectively). However, blue light (peak at 455 nm) enhanced calcification rates of P. lutea and A. variabilis (up to 4.1and 10.5-fold of dark values, respectively) reaching levels comparable to those measured under full spectrum illumination. However, contrary to our expectations, photosynthetic oxygen production was considerably reduced under blue light, to the extent that it remained below the compensation point even under illumination as high as 400μmol photons m−2 s−1. It is the first time that a direct effect of light not mediated by the photosynthetic process has been demonstrated to trigger LEC in corals. We propose that blue light signaling, and animal receptors thereof may be involved in the enhancement of calcification by hermatypic corals.

The effect of carbonate chemistry on calcification and photosynthesis in the hermatypic coral Acropora eurystoma
The rise in atmospheric CO2 has caused significant decrease in sea surface pH and carbonate ion (CO 22 3 ) concentration. This decrease has a negative effect on calcification in hermatypic corals and other calcifying organisms. We report the results of three laboratory experiments designed specifically to separate the effects of the different carbonate chemistry parameters (pH, CO 22 3 , CO2 [a...

Swart, P.K., 1983. Carbon and oxygen isotope fractionation in scleractinian corals: a review. Earth-Sci. Rev., 19: 51-80. The present theories on the fractionation of stable isotopes in scleractinian corals are critically discussed in the light of data available on primary productivity, respiration and stable isotope chemistry. These data support a model of fractionation in which the carbon and...
متن کاملOxygen and Heterotrophy Affect Calcification of the Scleractinian Coral Galaxea fascicularis
Heterotrophy is known to stimulate calcification of scleractinian corals, possibly through enhanced organic matrix synthesis and photosynthesis, and increased supply of metabolic DIC. In contrast to the positive long-term effects of heterotrophy, inhibition of calcification has been observed during feeding, which may be explained by a temporal oxygen limitation in coral tissue. To test this hyp...
متن کاملBenthic Communities to the Survival of Coral Recruits the Importance of Rate of Biomass Accumulation in Early Successional Stages Of
Although hermatypic coral recruits grow faster on the upper surfaces of artificial substrata on coral reefs, survival is greater in the shade on vertical and under surfaces. Growth of recruits is faster in shallow waters but survival increases with depth, at least to 20 m, as the light decreases. Adult corals can survive and grow in cool nutrient-rich waters, but survival of recruits is more su...
متن کاملATP Supply May Contribute to Light-Enhanced Calcification in Corals More Than Abiotic Mechanisms
Zooxanthellate corals are known to increase calcification rates when exposed to light, a phenomenon called light-enhanced calcification that is believed to be mediated by symbionts’ photosynthetic activity. There is controversy over the mechanism behind this phenomenon, with hypotheses coarsely divided between abiotic and biologically-mediated mechanisms. At the same time, accumulating evidence...
